Site Summary

This site consisted of a petroleum hydrocarbon plume exceeding a 6,000 sqft area onsite with total BTEX concentrations prior to injection over 80,000 µg/L.

Depth to water at the site was approximately 30 feet below ground surface (bgs) and the geology was sandy soils that showed promise for high volumes of injection and extraction.

Only 6 months after a single mobile remedial event that utilized a 2-step approach of surfactant-flushing with PetroSolv™ surfactant followed by the injection of our CBN™/PetroBac™ bioremediation products, a 98.6% contaminant mass reduction was achieved. 

Site conditions and remedial goal

This site consisted of a petroleum hydrocarbon plume exceeding a 6,000 sqft area onsite with total BTEX concentrations prior to injection over 80,000 µg/L. No free phase products were observed prior to injection but had been detected in some wells historically. Due to extremely high concentrations, LNAPL was suspected to be present.

Remediation utilizing multi-phase extraction had been utilized in the past with limited success.

ETEC Solution

The recommended approach for this site was 2 steps utilizing our core petroleum hydrocarbon remediation products.

Step one included a PetroSolv™ enhanced recovery event at highly impacted wells consisting of injection of 5,000 gallons of a 5% PetroSolv™ solution followed (12-24 hours later) by an extraction event of 10,000 gallons of surfactant and petroleum impacted groundwater.

Immediately following the extraction event 8,000 pounds of our Custom Blend Nutrients - CBN™ (macro-nutrients, micro-nutrients, and secondary electron acceptors) and 240 gallons of our PetroBac™ Stimulant Bundle (enzymes and bacteria) were injected into onsite wells to enhance bioremediation of remaining contaminants at the site.

Remedial outcome

Only 6 months after a single mobile remedial event that utilized a 2-step approach of surfactant-flushing with PetroSolv™ surfactant followed by the injection of our CBN™/PetroBac™ bioremediation products, the following were achieved:

  • 98.6% contaminant mass reduction,
  • 70% reduction in plume size,
  • 83% of impacted wells have now achieved regulatory compliance.
